In the fall of 2007, Four Marines from the Marine Corps Detachment Fort
traveled to Columbia, South Carolina to compete in the 14th Annual
USMC Mud Run. Even though tired, sore and bruised, all four had the time of their lives. During the long drive back the
Marines discussed why Fort Gordon couldn't have a similar event. The next morning they visited the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR)
Special Events Coordinator and asked that question. He stated that
unfortunately a lack of manpower and an event host had prohibited the
event from coming to post. The Marines bringing their typical Gung-Ho attitude volunteered to build the course
and host the event if MWR would
help coordinate the logistics. With that partnership in place, the
Marine Mud Challenge was born and has developed into an annual event which started in 2008
aboard Fort Gordon. It is hosted by the Marine Detachment Fort Gordon
association with Fort Gordon MWR.
Each year the event has grown and has quickly become one of the largest
events aboard post. The first year saw 573 total participants toe the
line and run through the woods of Fort Gordon. The total build cost for
the course was less than $2000 that first year. The 2013 hosting, sees us moving
into our 6th year and our expectation is a showing of more than 2600 participants including over 600 children. This year we are once again taking on a huge undertaking by building two
completely brand new courses( Adult and Child) at a different location aboard
post. The build cost has swelled to nearly $20,000 and will require
more than 100 dump trucks of clay and thousands of man-hours to complete. This would be an impossible task to complete if not for all the generous support from the men and women of Fort Gordon and the surrounding CSRA community.
We volunteer countless hours
working to make the Marine Mud Challenge that "Can't Miss Event of the
Year". Last year you saw us introduce chip timing for all our adult teams, live
bands playing during the duration of the event, we added the convenience
of accepting credit/debit card payments, and improved our concessions. This year we are increasing the width of the course during the new construction and by race day will have constructed a totally separate course for the Children's Challenge. The
Children's event will now have starting times constantly throughout the
day and the kids can run the course again and again and again. We are ecstatic to showcase both of our new courses on May 11th and can't
wait to see all the tired and muddy participants scrambling over the
Marine Walls as they head to the finish line.
One hundred percent of all revenue generated by this event is contributed to MWR programs and
events to support all Fort Gordon service members and their family members.
These events improvereadiness, mental and physical fitness, and foster a
family atmosphere amongst service members while enjoying all that the
CSRA has to offer.
Thank you for your support!!
